意気揚々と埼玉を出発した18歳の夏

2016年8月1日

そこから走り続けた

雨の日も酷暑の日も台風も山も

全部越えて、3363キロ

ヨコイシは遂に日本最南端の地 波照間島に上陸

自転車日本一周一年目のゴールの島は、日本で一番青い海に囲まれた島らしい

「ニシハマ」そう呼ばれる浜はこの世のものとは思えない美しさだ

実際に日本で一番美しい浜と名高く、ゆらゆらと太陽の輝きを反射して、サファイアみたいに青く輝いている

しばらくニシハマでプカプカしたら、いよいよゴールの最南端 高那崎へ

坂の上から見る波照間ブルーは空より青い青

まっすぐ伸びるさとうきび畑も超えて

日本最南端の地へ辿り着く

この石碑は49年前、1人の学生が建てたらしい

その人は1970年北海道から日本縦断の末、最後にこの場所に辿り着いた

その時はまだ波照間島はアメリカ領で、日本ではなかったため「日本最南端」でも無い

だけどその学生は「日本最南端」の石碑をアルバイトで稼いだお金で建てた

なんで自分のお金でまで、まだアメリカ領だったこの最果ての地にそんなもの建てたんだろう

ずっと疑問に思ってた、けど

なぁ、はるか昔の旅人さんや、今ならその気持ち少し分かる気がするよ

何千キロもさ、自分の足で旅をして

最後にこんな青空と海を見ちゃったらさ、いやでもワクワクしちゃうよなぁ

「ここが日本の最南端だ」って叫びたくなるよな、旗を立てたくなるよな

きっとそういうことだろう、旅人さん

そんでさ、「この石碑目指して、旅してこい」

そうやって49年前の旅人と会話してる気がした

1970年に建てられてから、何人の旅人がロマンを追い求めてこの地を目指したんだろうな

ヨコイシの冒険はまだまだこれからだ

そう思わせてくれる最果ての空だった

実際、これからの自転車日本一周で一年目をはるかに超える困難が訪れることを、この時はまだ知らなかった
