8月9日の長崎（re:日本一周#55）

8月9日 小浜温泉で朝を迎えた

外はあいにくの雨模様

強く振り続ける雨粒を見ながら悩んでいた

チェックアウトは10時なので、それまでのんびりも出来たけど、そうはいかない理由があったから

皆さんは8月9日が長崎にとって何の日か分かるだろうか？

原子爆弾が投下された日だ

1945年8月9日 午前11時2分

その日から毎年、長崎ではこの日この時間にサイレンが鳴る。道行く人は立ち止まり、犠牲になった方々と平和に黙祷を捧げる

もう長崎の原爆資料館は人生で何回も訪れていた。だけど8月9日 11時2分にどうしても長崎市へ行きたかった。どうしても肌でその時間を感じたかった。そのためには今日、小浜温泉から60キロ先の長崎市内に11時2分に辿り着きたかったんだ。

今日だけは妥協せずに絶対に辿り着きたかったから、まだ振り続ける雨粒の中、宿を飛び出して長崎市を目指し始める

まずは山越えをして諫早方面へ

だけど山の頂上で大雨にぶち当たる

コンビニでしばらく時間を潰そうかと思ったけど、このままじゃ11時2分に間に合わない…

意を決して大雨の中、山を下り始める

ブレーキも効きにくくて、体も冷えて、状況は最悪だった。だけど「絶対間に合わせる」その気持ちだけで長崎市を目指す

するとだんだん雨は弱くなっていく

トラックの水跳ねを受けながらも、それでも止まらずに進む。

11時2分に間に合うか、本当にギリギリのラインで走り続けた

そして10時50分 12分前にギリギリ長崎市内に辿り着く

今まさに平和記念式典が行われている平和公園へ急ぐ

地元の人も観光客もテレビ局も安倍総理も

色んな人が平和を祈るために集まる

そして、11時2分

街中をサイレンが鳴り響く

日本全国が静寂に包まれる瞬間だ

外国人も観光客も地元の方も、静かに目を閉じる。

72年前のこの日、この時間。高温の閃光が炸裂してたくさんの人が死んだ。キノコ雲は天高く昇って、死の灰を降らせた

その事実は今となっては「事実」として感じることは少ないけれど、それ以上に8月9日の11時2分に爆心地で黙祷を捧げるということは、そんな現実を肌で感じる部分が多くあった

雨の中でも来てよかった。そう素直に思えた

そして遠くから覗く平和記念像

垂直にあげた右手は原爆投下の空を
水平にした左手は平和を
横にした足は原爆投下後の長崎の静けさを
縦にした足は救った命を表している

ここに来ている多くの人がそんな平和を願っていると思うと胸が熱くなった

そして空はいつのまにか

晴れ間が見えていた

地元の人に聞くと、8月9日は猛暑の日が多いんだそう。今日も降水確率80パーセントを跳ね返していた。これは今も空から見てる長崎のご先祖様の祈りなんだろうか。不思議なこともあるもんだ

そしてまた歩みを進める

道中、涙雨のように雨がまた降って来て、本当にあの晴れ間は奇跡みたいだったなぁなんて思いながら走る

そして佐世保の親戚の家に近づく

ゴールする前に西海橋という知る人ぞ知る名所に寄り道

見所は何といっても圧倒される大きさのアーチ橋とその下に渦巻く渦潮だ

鳴門の渦潮と比べると規模は小さいが、ほぼ毎日のように渦潮が観れるのが魅力的

鳴門よりも確実性があるからヨコイシ的にはこっちのほうが好きだったりする

そんな西海橋を楽しんで、無事一泊二日長崎一周ツアーを終えて親戚の家に帰宅

いよいよ九州の旅も最終盤を迎えようとしていた

走行距離 121キロ
雲仙市小浜→佐世保市
総走行距離 4804キロ
