歩くという修行を積み重ねて更新が遅くなりましたが、昨日と今日の分をまとめて。

71日目の昨日はいつも通りの何気ない朝だった

道の駅かわうその里すさきで起床し、朝6時に歩き始める。

最近は朝焼けの中歩くのが好きで、6時にはスタートしないとそわそわしてしまう。

昨日も朝焼けの中を歩き始めて、まずは須崎市街から川を越え

峠道に入り始める

ここから37番札所の岩本寺までは30キロ

その間はひたすら峠の登り降りだ

まぁ今の横石にとってこの程度の峠なら文字通り朝飯前。しかも昨日は何キロ歩くか決めてはいなかったが、明日大雨予報なのもあったので出来る限り歩くつもりでいたから未舗装の遍路道はなるべく通らずに多少遠回りをしても足を残すため国道を通ろうと決めていたため、緩い登りが繰り返される

昇る朝日に照らされながら4キロ歩いてコンビニで朝ごはんを買って、これまた歩きながら食べる。

今日はなるべく時間を無駄にせず、とことん歩いていたかった。

そして食べながら焼坂峠を登り終えて

四国にしては珍しく長い焼坂トンネルを抜けると（トンネルとか峠はやっぱり四国の比にならないくらい日本アルプスが厳しいね）目の前に女性のお遍路さんがいたので少し後を追う形で後ろを歩く。

「ま、すぐ追いついて抜かすんだろうなぁ」なんて思ってたが、なかなか追いつかない。

「え？男の人かな？しかも若くて早い？」なんて思うほどに歩くのが速いが、やはり後ろ姿が女性らしい。しばらくしてやっと追いつくと、横石の母親以上の年齢の女性だったことにさらなる驚きを隠せなかった。荷物もそこそこあるし、それなのに横石と同じくらいのペースなのが信じられなくて思わず話が弾む。

話を聞くとそのペースにも納得。1日に歩く距離は25キロほどと短めだが、なによりお遍路7回目だそう。それは早くもなるよね歩くの…

この方とは5キロほど一緒に歩きながらまだまだお遍路初心者の横石に色々享受してもらった。本当にありがたい限りだ。そして今日最大の峠である七子峠に登る前に女性はコンビニに寄って準備をするというのでお別れ。一緒に歩いたおかげであまり疲れを感じずにここまで10キロを2時間弱で来ることができた。時刻はまだ朝の8時で、七子峠を登り始める

七子峠は四国最南端足摺岬へ行くためには避けて通れない難所だ。頂上まで6キロの登りで斜度自体はそこまででもないがとにかく長い。

だがしかしそこは横石くん。もうなんど日本中の厳しい峠を越えたことか。時速5キロ越えでそのまま歩き続けて、

9時過ぎには頂上へ。

正直言ってほとんどきつくなかった。

自転車日本一周の時は結構きつかったイメージはあったけど、やっぱり一度知った峠は楽になるし、あの時とはもう峠を越えた場数も違う。

そして七子峠の頂上で

四万十町へ

ここで30分ほど休憩を入れることに

すでにスタートから16キロ歩いていたので、身体は余裕があっても休憩は入れておきたかったのだ。

そしてここから岩本寺まで残り14キロ

下り基調ではあるが、まだまだアップダウンの続く道をひたすら歩く

のどかな山村の風景を眺めながら

かわいいお客さんと並走しながら（色が綺麗なヤマカガシという蛇だけど、深く噛まれると奥歯に強い毒を持ってます。一応見つけたら気をつけて）

そして道中では快活な女性の方に

普段は買えないようなお高めのコンビニご飯を差し入れしていただいた。岩本寺まで残り3キロだし、ちょうどお昼時なので岩本寺で食べることにしよう。

そして12時半

快調に30キロを歩いて無事37番岩本寺へ

ここでまたしっかり先ほどの差し入れで昼ごはんを食べながら休憩をとって

午後1時。いよいよ四国お遍路中最長距離となる岩本寺からの札所間80キロ越えの難所、金剛福寺へ。金剛福寺は四国最南端の足摺岬にあるので、東南端最御崎寺に続いて最果ての札所だ。

そしてこの時から横石はある決意を秘めて岩本寺を歩き始めていた。

それは「今日は今までで一番の長距離を歩こう」だ。

今までの徒歩旅の最長歩行距離は52キロ。いつかこれを越えたいと密かに野望を持っていたが、今回歩いているのは「修行の道場」と呼ばれる厳しい高知県の中でも特に厳しい最南端足摺岬への道のり。横石がどこまで歩けるか試すにはこんなに良い環境無いのではないかと。

そう心のどこかで思ってからはひたすら葛藤しながらしばらく岩本寺からの道のりを歩く

「いやでも無理はあかんよ。暗くなるし、事故も怖いし…」

「いやいや、自分の限界を試すなら今だろ？いけるよやってみろよ、ワクワクすんだろ」

5キロほどこんな葛藤を繰り広げていたが、歩き続けていると不思議とそんな葛藤も消えていき決心は固まってくる。

「よし、行こう」

どうせ明日は大雨で歩けなくなるだろう。

だったら今日のうちに歩けるとこまで進みたいし、なにより今の横石の限界はどこなのか知りたい。そう思って決心はついた。

決心がつくと不思議と歩調も早くなる

もう既に35キロ歩いている身体なのに、気づけば時速は6キロ近くになっていた

身体も心も軽い。行けそうだ

そしてこの日唯一の未舗装区間も

迷うことなく無事突破

山道から国道56号に再度合流して、しばらくは下り基調になる

下っている途中には「ちょっと寄っていきやー」と声をかけられて、お接待を受ける

冷蔵庫の中のものを好きなようにとって行っていいし、カップ麺なども食べたいっていいよと言われるが、毎回四国の方のお遍路に対する優しさやもてなしには感動してしまう。

流石にカップ麺を食べる時間はなかったので、泣く泣く飲み物をいただき先に進むことに

そして午後3時

スタートから42キロ地点の温泉へ

ここは本当なら今日の目的地にしようとしていたところだ。この温泉のすぐ横には泊まれる遍路小屋があって、久方ぶりの温泉に入ってのんびりしたかったが、横石の決心は揺らぐことなく先へ進む。

そして午後5時。50キロ突破

ここまでは特に問題もなく歩ける。50キロを歩くこと自体はだいぶ慣れたものだ（もちろん疲労はあるけどね）

だがここからが勝負だった。

どんどん暗くなる秋の日暮れ。交通事故や暗闇の怖さ。そしてなによりこれ以上歩いたことがない不安。

それでも前に進む

5時半には過去最高となる53キロを突破し

最後の野宿地として予定していた公園も越える

これでいよいよ次の野宿地は未定になった。

ただひたすら歩くだけだ

雨予報が迫ってきて、どんどん曇り空が深くなっていく

そして午後6時半。薄暮の時間も終わり完全に真っ暗に

ヘッドライトの光だけが頼りだ

バックパックには反射材をつけて、ナイトウォーク開始。

これだけ旅をしている横石だが、実は本格的なナイトウォークは初めてだ。今までは極力夜は出歩く事を避けていたし、それが鉄則だと今でも思っている。夜は事故に遭う危険性も、野生動物と遭う危険性も、心身の疲労も、全てが昼よりも跳ね上がるのだ。

実際6時半からの真っ暗な時間はとにかく精神を削られる。

前を照らして道の確認。

だけど後ろにも耳を傾けて車が近づいてきては接触しないようになるべく端を歩く。

そしてなにより暗闇が身体にまとわりついて空気が重い。山も海も昼間はあんなに綺麗なのに、夜は人間を拒むかのごとき不気味さで迫ってくる。

55キロを越えてからは身体の疲労、そして夜との格闘を続けていた。

夜の歩行で一番安心できたのは、昼はあんなに怖いトンネルだ。トンネルは昼も夜も明るさが変わらない分、外よりずっと明るく唯一のオアシスになった。

そして60キロを越えた地点で時刻は夜の部7時前、流石に疲労がだいぶ溜まっているので道端に座り込んで休憩する。

そして異変。「あれ？ヘッドライトがない」

しばらく探すと自分の頭につけていたことに気づく。

自分が感じている以上に疲れは溜まっているようだ。そしてなにより怖かったのが、目に疲れがきていた事。

スマホの文字がボヤけて読めなくなっていたのだ。目の前の風景にも焦点が合いにくい。

これは流石に危ない。

そう判断してここから5キロ先の道の駅をこの挑戦のゴールとすることに。

そりゃ疲労も溜まるよな。高知に入ってから毎日50キロのペースで歩き始めて、その上で60キロ以上今歩いてるんだもん。

「もうちょっとだけもってくれ俺の身体」

そう自分に言い聞かせて残り5キロを歩く

BGMはここに来てZARDの負けないでが響く

こうやって限界に近づいて来ると、物凄く「生きている」感じがする。焦点の合わない目、ガタが来る足、暗闇を恐れる心。波打つ心臓。

「あー俺生きてんだな」

そう思いながら道の駅の灯りが見えた

午後19時45分に無事ゴール

歩行距離は65キロ

平均歩行時速は5.4キロだった

そして程なくして降り始める雨。

どうやらギリギリで駆け込めたようだ

友に言われた「よーだいは原動機付いてる」その意味が少し自分でも分かった気がした

夜の闇を潜り抜け、限界近くまで歩き切った安堵からこの日はブログも書けずに泥のように眠った。

そして次の日（時系列的に今日）

朝から予報通りの大雨。

道の駅の職員にも改めて許可を取ってここで1日停滞する気満々だった。

が、しかし午前7時。

雨が突然止む。

急いで雨雲レーダーを確認すると8時過ぎまでの1時間は小康状態になるそう。

「え？この1時間は少なくとも歩けるじゃん」

そう考え始めた瞬間身体が疼きだして

10分後にはもはや意図せず歩きだしていた

この行動は横石も未だに分からない

昨日の65キロの疲れも勿論残っているし、大雨にこれから打たれるのも確定なのに。

「少しでも前に進みたい」

その一心で停滞しようとしていた心が吹き飛んで雨雲に突っ込んでいった

事実高知県は今日の日本の中で最も降水量が多く、断続的に目の前も見えなくなるような激しい雨に打たれ続け、道路も川になりながら歩くことになったが、不思議と後悔はしてない

寧ろあのまま今日歩かなかった方が後悔していた気がする

そしてずぶ濡れの体でそのまま12キロ雨に打たれ続けて、四万十市に入ったところで流石に限界がくる。

地元の方に聞いたところ、ここから600m進んだ四万十川の堤防沿いに竹島大師堂という無料で泊まることができるありがたい大師堂があるとのこと。

藁にもすがる思いでそこへ向かう。

とにかく幸運だったのは距離がここからすぐだったこと

そして辿り着いて戸を開けると

想像の10倍綺麗だった。

電源もあるし、電気もつくし、広い

地元の方に愛され、よく手入れされているのが伝わる。今日はそんな大師堂で泊まることにする。

よく考えたら高知に入った初日もものすごい雨に打たれそうになって駆け込んだのは佐喜浜の大師堂だったな。お大師さまに守られてるんだなぁ…

そして今日も少しでも前に進めたので、明日はいよいよ高知最大の難所である金剛福寺へ辿り着ける。修行の道場もいよいよ終盤だ
