自転車日本一周 1年目

夏のにおいを追いかけて（re:日本一周#21）

21日目は岩国のネットカフェで起きる

相変わらずの晴れだ

山口を横断して九州を目指すため走り始める

21日目の道のり

まずは岩国の名所 日本三名橋の錦帯橋へ

早朝の誰1人いない錦帯橋を楽しむ

本当は橋を渡るためにはお金がかかるみたいだけど、朝早すぎてお金を取る係員さえいない

「この橋クソほど渡りにくいな」とか思いながら渡ってたけど、実はこの橋がアーチ型なのは強度を高めるためで、錦帯橋周辺の地盤が弱かったので中国の文献に学んで石を積み上げる技術を使ったそう。
じゃあ、なぜアーチ型が連なっているかというと、当時にはまだ30メートルもの橋をまっすぐかける技術がなかったんだそう。

ようするに当時の最先端を行く技術の集大成がこのデザインの橋を作ったんだって

「性能が良いものはデザインもかっこいい」って誰かがテレビで言ってたけど、その通りだ

バイクだって自転車だって、性能が良ければ良いほどロマンをそそられるデザインであったりするから。

そんな豆知識も勉強しながら錦帯橋を後にして、一路西へ。岩国→下松→周南と進む

周南あたりまではとにかくのどかな山々のアップダウン。特にきつくもなく、特に見所もなく（山口の皆さんごめんなさい）スイスイ走る

気づけば10時半。ふと道路の気温表示を見て泣きたくなる

雲ひとつない快晴の中、10時半で既に34度を示す表示

フラフラする頭の中で考えた

「流石に毎日晴れすぎじゃね？」

思い返してみると、1日目と16日目の夕方に降られたゲリラ豪雨以外、21日間全て快晴だった

どうやらヨコイシは「陽大」という名前通りに太陽に愛される存在になっていたらしい

もはや伝説級に晴れ男だった

行く先々の川は干上がっていて、道端の雑草は日に日にしおれている

そりゃ晴れていれば景色もいいし、雨に比べたら圧倒的にストレスもないが、この時ばかりは自分の晴れ男具合が怖くなった

と思いながらも、思いっきり青い夏空の下を走っていれば鼻歌が出てしまうから不思議だ

夏を口ずさめばあら不思議、歌の物語の主人公になった気分で風になれた

この日は午後になると37度まで上がっていた

でも、こんな日に食べるソフトクリームは最高だ。ガリガリ君は幸せだ。

普通だったらうんざりするような出来事でも、それを幸せに変えるような幸せが日常にはたくさん転がっている。それを見つけるのが少し得意になっていた

防府市を抜けて山口市も越えると、いよいよ九州に近づく

風景はより一層のどかになっていく

呼んでいる胸の どこか奥で
いつも何度でも 夢を描こう
悲しみの数を言い尽くすより
同じくちびるでそっと歌おう

長い旅路の果てに 輝く何かが

どこまでものどかな山口を走って、気づけば100キロを超えた。宇部市に入ったところで時刻は午後4時を回ったので、今日はこの辺りで店じまい。

ブックオフで何冊か小説を買い込んだから、テントでも張ってゆっくり読もうかな。ヒグラシの声に包まれながら

走行距離 124キロ

山口県岩国市→山口県宇部市
