闇が怖くて（徒歩日本縦断#80）

80日目の今日は今治市の星の浦海浜公園で起床

松山と今治を繋ぐ幹線道路沿いということもあって夜中もひっきりなしに車の音がうるさかったが、もはや毎日50キロを歩いてる疲労もあってそんなの関係なしに寝れる。

「野宿だと疲れが取れないでしょう？」とよく聞かれるが、もはや野宿以外にしてないから比べようがない。疲れは多分取れてる。じゃないと毎日50キロは歩けないだろう。

そんな今日は今治市街に６つ連なる札所ラッシュをこなして、そこから25キロほど歩き、いよいよ四国最難関の横峰寺の麓の東屋まで行く

距離にして48キロ。もはや平均的となった距離なので気持ちは楽だが、札所ラッシュの分参拝で時間は取られるだろう。

ということでスタートから5.5キロ先の54番札所の延命寺が開く7時ちょうどに着くように、朝5時50分に歩き始める

まだ暗いが、幹線道路沿いなので全く気にならないほどに街灯もあって怖くはない

そして予定通り7時ちょうど

54番延命寺に到着

朝一番で参拝を済ませて、次の55番南光坊に向かう。そしてここからはしばらく今治市街を縫うように繋がる遍路道

通勤中のサラリーマン、通学してる高校生。そんな当たり前の朝の風景もお遍路をしていると懐かしい気がする。街に朝いることなんてなかなかないからね。

そして延命寺から3.4キロ歩いて

55番南光坊へ

55個もの札所を回って初めての「寺」と名前のつかない札所は今治市街のど真ん中に位置していた。数百メートル歩けば今治駅なのに、やはりお寺なだけあって精悍な雰囲気だ。住職さんも優しくて、納経所にも誰もいなかったのでしばし話し込んで次の56番泰山寺へ向かう

これまた今治市街の住宅地を縫うように歩いて

午前9時前に56番札所 泰山寺へ

泰山寺を過ぎて、次の57番栄福寺に向かうと、今治市街の町並みからのどかな郊外の田園風景へと変わっていく

田んぼの間の細い路地を抜けて

57番栄福寺へ

そして栄福寺から次の58番仙遊寺までは峠道

たかだか標高250mほどだったが、その半分が未舗装でなかなかしんどい

だが、そんな峠を駆け上がっていくと

通ってきた今治の街並みを一望だ

大好きなしまなみ海道も見えている

お遍路を始めてから、本当にこういう風景に出会う機会が多くなった。

「お遍路はその道のり自体を好きになって何回も回る人がたくさんいるんだ」そう聞いたことがあるが、過酷な道のりでもまた歩いてしまう気持ちが分かる。もはや、参拝ももちろんだがそれ以上に四国の何気ない風景と人に惚れているんだろう。

そんな絶景を味わいつつ、峠を登った後は

最後の試練である山門を抜けてからの長い階段を登りきって（正直この階段ゾーンが本当にキツイ。どのお寺もそうだけど足に乳酸が溜まりまくる）

58番仙遊寺に到達（なぜか本堂の写真を撮り忘れたから山門ですこれ）

仙遊寺は「お遍路を世界遺産に」運動の発起人となったお寺で、どのお寺よりもお遍路文化を大切にする素晴らしいお寺なので、眺望を楽しむついでにでもみなさんぜひ参拝してみて欲しい

そしてそんな仙遊寺を後に、今日ラストの59番国分寺に向けて山を下る

下り道でも素晴らしい眺望を目の前に捉えながらの気持ちのいいルートだ。

そして午後12時前に

59番国分寺へ

ここでは今日55番札所からずっと札所ごとに遭遇していた車遍路の方に「君、スピードが車と変わらないじゃん。健脚すぎるよ」と驚かれてエールとともにお接待として1000円をありがたくいただいて、今日の参拝を終えた

これから午後はつぎの難関横峰寺に登る少し手前の東屋まで25キロひたすら歩くだけなのだが、インスタで応援してくださっている今治のフォロワーの方が「ぜひお昼を食べましょう」と言ってくださったので、国分寺から約5キロ先の道の駅で待ち合わせて、そのまますぐ近くの湯ノ浦ハイツという宿泊施設に連れて行っていただき、ランチバイキングをご馳走になってしまった

今治の青い海を一望できるレストランで、普段は絶対に食べられない温かくて美味しいご飯をお腹いっぱいに食べられる幸せ…たくさんお話しもできて素敵な時間となった。本当にありがとうございます！（座って昼飯食べたの久しぶりだな、、最近歩きながら食べてたからなぁ）

そして時刻は午後2時。残り20キロを歩き始める

風景は変わらずのどかな田園風景なのだが、ひとつ変わったことといえば

目の前に四国最高峰の石鎚山を含む山々がそびえ立っていること。つぎの横峰寺はそんな石鎚山の中腹に位置する山寺なので嫌でもこの山々の中に切り込んでいかなければいけない。

まぁしかし横石はその性質上。こうやって山を見るとウズウズしてしまうタイプだから、むしろ気合が入ってありがたい。

そしてそんな山々を見つめているうちに、不思議な気分になる。

山って遠くから見ているうちは、その全貌が見えて、しかも近づくほどに近づいていることが視覚的に実感できるくせに、いざ登り始めた瞬間前に進むのも辛いし全貌見えなくなる

その感覚は遠くから全貌を見た後にやってくるので、絶望の感覚に似ていて、近くにあるはずの頂上が見えなくて、それでもキツイ山を登り続ける辛さだけが残る。

それってまさに人生なんじゃないかと

何か１つの目標に向かって進むと、最初はその理想像も見えていて、一歩一歩着実に進んでいるのが実感できる。だがいざ近づけば近づくほど、その頂上は見えなくなっていって、辛くて苦しくて逃げ出したくなる。

そんな試練を乗り越えた人だけが辿り着けるのが頂上なのだと。

「人生は旅だ」なんてセリフはいままでクサイ台詞だとばかり思っていて、意味も分からなかったけど、最近やっと分かってきた。たしかに通じるものがたくさんあるのだから。

そして夕暮れが迫ってくる

今日の残り5キロは人里離れた街灯ひとつない完全な山道だ。なんとか日暮れまでには辿り着きたかったが、これだとギリギリ日が暮れてしまうだろう。

それでもできるだけ日があるうちに距離を稼ごうと歩調を早めるも

午後5時20分に日の入りを迎えて、残り3.5キロが残る中みるみるうちに山は闇に包まれた

暗くて息苦しい…

すぐそこに違う東屋があったので「もうここでいいや」と甘えたい自分を一括して、闇の中をヘッドライトの光を頼りに進む。

闇が怖くて旅なんて出来るか。

最初はそう思っていたが、いざ本当の暗闇に包まれると怖くないわけがない。これが動物の本能だと思う。

脂汗をかきながらも必死で前に進む。しかも登りが続く山道なので今すぐ逃げ出したくなる。逃げる場所もないのに。

ここは宇宙より真っ暗だと思った

そしてふと、今の世の中に本当の暗闇を知っている人は何人いるのかと思った

1人孤独に山に包まれるこの恐怖と、どこか宙に浮いたような浮遊感。木々の合間を揺れる月明かりに、極大オリオン座。散りばめられた星々にどこかで鳴く動物の影とヘッドライトに照らされた動物の目の光を…

この暗闇があるからこそ、朝の光はあれほどに眩しいのだと俺は知っている。多分世の中の大半の人が知らない怖さを知っているからこそ、美しさも知っている。

そう思うと急に夜が愛おしくなった。もちろん怖いけど、怖いからこそ愛おしくなった。「夜が怖い」という当たり前の感情は現代では当たり前でない。旅はきっと非日常を体験するものたけど、自然の摂理を体験するものでもあるのだ。

そうして山奥にひっそり佇む東屋にテントを張り、ひっそりと寝袋にくるまって今日も終わる
