天草一気（徒歩日本縦断#106）

106日目の今日は同じ大学の日本一周チャリダーヨツとフランス人チャリダージョーと島原小浜温泉の公園で起床

公園の屋根付きステージの上で3人がテントを並べる姿は異質そのものだったが、やはり3人で寝ると安心感がある。そして小浜温泉の方達はとにかく温泉のように温かい。

朝からステージすぐ下の広場でゲートボールをやっている地元の年配の方が15人くらいいたが、「え？15人全員と話したんじゃね？」ってくらいに興味津々と話しかけてくださり、「頑張ってね」と声をかけてくださる。まるで自分が野宿していたのを忘れてしまうようだ。

そして今日野宿していた公園は「世界一長い足湯」のギネスに載る足湯の名所であり常に硫黄の匂いの湯気が出ている。

というか川でも

なんなら排水口からでも出てる。

だからだろうか、蒸気で街全体が暖められてるんじゃないかと錯覚するほど野宿中も寝汗をかいて寝た。ちなみに暖かい弊害としては蚊がまだ活動しててテントの中に入り込んできて夜中に格闘した

そんな今日は島原半島の先端、口之津まで21キロ歩き、そこからフェリーに30分ほど乗って熊本県は天草を目指す。天草は鬼池から天草市街までは13キロあるので34キロの歩行距離だ

ちなみにフェリーに乗ってまで天草を目指す理由は単純で「自転車日本一周の時に通らなかったし、世界遺産になった地を旅したかった」これに尽きる。

ヨツも共に天草を目指すらしいので、今日の夜も2人で語り合える

そしてジョーはここでお別れだ

昨日はお互いの旅や旅をして思ったことについて半分英語、半分片言の日本語で語り合ったが、ジョーは本当に星の王子様のような考えを持っている。国籍なんか関係なく人として尊敬できる素敵な旅人だった。

「日本の人はとても優しいよ。いつも温かく親切だ。だけどお金や働くことばかり考えている人が多いね。それも素敵なことなんだけど、なでこんなに綺麗な海や山が目の前に広がっている国なのに目を向けようとしないのかな。もっとゆっくり、目の前に溢れる自然や人の温かさに目を向けることは人生において本当に大切なことだと思うんだけどなぁ」

昨日の夜に冬空の下でお酒を飲みながらジョーが言った言葉が胸に染み渡る。

どうかお元気で、この道のどこかでまた会える日まで。

そうしてジョーはまだ見ぬ日本の素晴らしさを見に行くために優しい笑顔で先へ行った

本当に素敵な出会いをした。横石も先へ進もう

今日は雨予報だったが、天気は曇り。雨が降る気配もまだ無いのでこのまま歩いて行けそうだ

しばらく海沿いを進んでから、細道を山の方へ逸れる。

斜度は15パーセントは超えるくらいの急坂で汗も噴き出してくる道のりだったが、そんな山の斜面を存分に活用した段々畑がひたすらに続く壮観な風景の中を登っていく

頂上まで登って展望台から見る風景はまさに絶景。まるで北海道美瑛のパッチワークの丘を彷彿とさせるなかなかお目にかかることのできない風景だ。対岸にはこれから向かう天草諸島が見えている。

島原半島に聳える雲仙普賢岳はたしかに人の命を奪う大災害を引き起こしたが、それ以上にこの地域に恵みを与えているのだなと改めて実感する。要は自然との向き合い方なんだなと。自然が恐ろしいのは当たり前だ。天災だったときに起こるが、人間に対して恵みを与えてくれるのも自然なのを現代に生きる我々は忘れてはいけない。「自然が怖い」という当たり前の感情を大切に持ち続けること。それは同時に自然を大切にする心にもつながる。だからこそ昔の人々は自然を崇め奉ったのだ。

そしてこの山を降りればもうフェリーターミナルは見えてくる

ここで先に来て周辺を観光していたヨツと合流して、2人でフェリーに乗り込む

いよいよ長く滞在した長崎に別れを告げて熊本へと向かう。30分の短い時間だがやはりフェリーというものはワクワクして仕方ない。しかも今回はヨツと2人なのもあっていつもより心臓は高鳴った。（フェリーでは寝たけど笑）

そして

ちょうど30分後に熊本に明治大学旅人倶楽部の2人で上陸！（勝手に今作ったけど、この「倶楽部」っていうのがおっさんっぽくていいでしょ）

徒歩日本縦断22都道府県目で残すは鹿児島と沖縄のみになってしまった。寂しさもひとしお、また新たな地を歩き始める。

さすが天草諸島。曇っていても海は綺麗だ。これはまだ内海なので外海に出て晴れればどんな風景が待っているのだろうか…想像するだけで心が躍る。

そして国道324号を南下して13キロ歩いて天草市街へ

今日はヨツと今までの旅の話とこれからの無事を祈って最後の晩餐だ。

今まで東京で散々2人で旅への憧れを語りながら飲み明かした方が、今回はこうして旅の道中、遥か遠い九州の地で飲む。

場所はもちろん。

西日本といえばのファミレス、ジョイフルじゃい！（居酒屋で飲めるほど金ないんじゃい！）

あの時東京で語り合った俺らの憧れ、まだまだ追いかけ続けようや。自分に負けんなよ、お互いな！

そうして天草の夜は更けていった
