明日空が晴れたなら（徒歩日本縦断#119）

また深夜まで月光荘の仲間たちと三線を弾きながら（横石は弾けないよ）歌って飲んで、本島最後の夜もこれ以上ない島時間を過ごし、

雨の打ち付ける音で目が覚める

予想外だったが、朝方はなかなかに酷い雨

だけど今日は進まなければならない

というのもいよいよ日本最南端の地波照間島への玄関口。石垣島までのフライトが今日の11時に迫っていたからだ。

本当にこの旅の終着点はすぐそこまで迫っていた

まずは月光荘から5キロほど先にある空港まで向かう、余裕を持って1時間半前に着いたので

タコライスをいただきながらぼやーっと離着陸する飛行機を眺める

ガス缶が廃棄処分になったり、モバイルバッテリーを預け荷物の中から一つ取り忘れたり、随分と冷や汗をかきながらのチェックインとなったが無事に荷物を預けてチケットもゲット

これ分かる人には分かって欲しいんだけど、飛行機に乗る前に大きい荷物を預けて身が軽くなる瞬間って凄いワクワクしない？「あぁ、これから遠いところに行くんだ」って

このバックパックも随分と頑張ってくれた。

48ℓの容量を優に越してしまう荷物をパンパンに詰め込んで歩いてきたのに、その心意気に応えるように頑丈に横石の背中と共にここまできた

ちなみに荷物の重さは17キロ。普通48ℓだと10-13キロくらいまでだろう。もはやこのバックパックは一番の相棒だ。預け荷物に預けるときに寂しささえ感じてしまった

そして定刻通りに搭乗開始

雨は止んできたがドン曇りの中を、勇ましい音を立てながら空へと浮き上がっていく

そして瞬く間に雲を突き抜けて青空の下へ

おそろしく早く流れる風景を眺めていたら少し寂しくなった

那覇から石垣までの距離411キロの間、フライト時間は48分

歩きだったら10日かかるような距離を居眠りで辿り着いてしまうことに言いようのない寂しさが溢れ出る

徐々に夢から現実に戻されている気がする

もう二度と、こんなに長距離を歩いて旅をするなんて最高にきつくて贅沢な旅は出来ないかもしれない。そりゃあ飛行機乗るよなみんな。楽だもん。

でもさ、これだけは忘れないで欲しいし、忘れないでいたい。楽なことは決して楽しいこととは結びつかないと。きつかったり、辛かったりすることを成し遂げた時ほど、人は思い返したときに「楽しかったなぁ、青春だったなぁ」と思うのだと。それは多分何歳になってもだ。

そして、もし良かったら今横石の旅を見てくださっている皆さん。どうかこの徒歩日本縦断という旅路を頭の片隅にでも置いて、忘れないでいて欲しい

このどんどんとクソ便利になっている現代で、その流れとはおよそ真逆に、愚直に日本を歩いて旅をしたバカな男がいたことを

そんな物語をたまにでも、思い出してクスッとでも笑ってくれたり、少しでも勇気や元気が出た時、横石はこの、現実と向き合う寂しさも好きになれる気がする。

そして飛行機は南ぬ島（ぱいぬしま）石垣空港に辿り着く

ここから波照間へのフェリーが出る離島ターミナルまでは15キロ。今日はそこまで歩いて市街地のゲストハウスに泊まる

そして明日、波照間へのフェリーが出港し日本最南端の碑に辿り着いたとき徒歩日本縦断は完結を迎える。

もちろんフェリーが出港する保証はない

この時期の八重山の海は荒れることが多く、50%以上の確率で欠航することがあるからだ

欠航の場合は明後日以降にゴールは持ち越しとなるが、まぁ自然には逆らえないよな。最後の運試しといこうか。
