徒歩日本縦断120日目

起きてからすぐにフェリーの運行状況をチェックする

よし。最後の運試しは成功だ。

神様は横石に微笑んだ

あとはフェリーに乗って、日本最南端の地、波照間島に辿り着き、無事に最南端の高那崎にある「日本最南端の碑」に辿り着くだけである

日本最北端宗谷岬から果てしなく思えるほどに長かったこの旅路がいよいよ終結を迎えようとしていた

朝日が昇る中、午前8時発のフェリーぱいじまに乗船。3年前の自転車日本一周で来た時と船が変わったらしく二倍くらいの大きさにはなっていた。おかげで揺れも少なめ。途中多少の揺れはあったものの、窓の外の海をのんびり眺めていた。

本当に最後だなぁ

徐々に濃くなっていく波照間島の島影を眺めながらぼんやりと思う

本当に、本当にこんなところまで来たんだなぁ

フェリーで石垣島から波照間島へは1時間半で到着する。今日も定刻通り9時半に波照間港へ到着

ここからゴールの高那崎までは4キロほどで着いてしまうが、まずは日本一綺麗な海と名高いニシハマへと向かう

坂を降りると見えてくる青すぎる海

日本最南端の海が日本一綺麗だなんて、なんて浪漫だろう



そうだ。自転車日本一周の時に初めて見たこの海の色。紛れも無い最南端の海の色。

この風景に憧れて、横石はここまで歩いてきたんだ。「這ってでも波照間に辿り着く」そう信じてここまで来た。

北海道をタクマと2人で歩き始めたとき

果てしなく広がる原野に圧倒されながらも、心を何度も挫かれそうになった

何キロ進んでも変わらぬ風景、痛む足

2人で原野に座り込んで、励ましあって、歌を歌って、少しずつ前に進んだっけな

左足首に激痛が走ってストレッチが欠かせなかった
膝痛かったよな、タクマも

1日30キロも歩くのが限界で、それでも進み続けた北海道。

そして700キロ近く歩いて、函館までたどり着いた時には、歩ける距離も増えていき、同時に歩き旅の魅力にどんどん魅了されていった

移りゆく雲と刻々と変わる空の色

空より青い海の色

時が止まったような黄昏時

歩き旅というおおよそ文明とはかけ離れた時速5キロの世界は、普段気にも留めない世界の理を鮮明に映し出し、色鮮やかに目の前を照らした

そして季節は晩夏から初秋へ移り変わり

相方のタクマと別れ、横石は一人で北アルプスの日本最高峰の山々に挑んでいった

雲をも突き抜ける天空の世界まで

この足で歩いていく

高くなればなるほど薄くなる酸素と濃くなる空の青

意志に反してバラバラになっていく足

それでも高みを目指す意志

殻を一つも二つも破って、いくつもの山を越えていった

そしてまだ蝉の鳴く暑い10月

京都大阪と西の大都会を越えて、お遍路もやったっけな

お遍路はこの旅路の中でも1番の過酷な道のりとなった

毎日平均50キロを歩き通して、1100キロを超える長き修行の道のりを24日で歩き抜いた

今思えば、お遍路中何故あんなにも歩けたのか分からない。意地もあるし、それ以上に四国のお遍路文化がたまらなく心地よかったなぁ

道行く人とは必ず挨拶を交わすようになり、歩いていく道のりは日本の原風景をこれでもかと味わえるような素敵な道のりだった

「これが日本という国の美しさか」

自転車日本一周をしてもなお、日本を旅をしてしまう

その理由が明確になる

どこか切なく胸を打つ、美しい日本の風景

心からありがとうと思える、人々との出会い

自分の奥底から湧き上がってくるのは、そんな掴みようのなく所有することは出来ない、だけども、いやだからこそ、美しいものたちを、とことん追いかけていきたい。ただそれだけだと気づいた。

そして季節は秋から冬へ

凍てつく朝が増えていき

霜が降りるほどになっていき

どんどん寒くなる季節の中で旅もいよいよ終盤を迎えて中国から九州へ

白い息で手を温めながら、南へと向かった


南九州から沖縄へ辿り着くと、12月になったというのに季節は一気に夏に戻っていくかのように暑い日差しと青い海

そうやって困難を越えて、季節を越えて、海を越えて、4000キロを歩き抜いて、横石は今、憧れ続けた日本最南端の地へと辿り着く

歩くというなによりも単純明快な行為は、理屈や言葉を越えて、人と繋がり、なによりも美しい世界を見せてくれた

思えば最北端をスタートした時

後ろには道が無く、果てしない海が広がり、目の前には果てしない道が広がっていた。

そこから3896キロ、120日間に及ぶ旅路の中で一つずつ道を選択し、その道を信じて歩き抜き、その道の途中で様々な風景、たくさんの人たちに出会い、最南端に着いた時

目の前にはもう道が無くなっていた

振り返るとそこには、今まで歩いてきた道のりが光の筋のようになって、たくさんの人の笑顔と共に続いていた

「あぁ、そうか、俺は本当に自分の足で途方も無い距離を歩いて最果てまで来たんだな」

初めてそれを実感して、最南端に広がる空と海を見あげた時、笑いなのか涙なのかわからないけど、泣き笑いが止まらなくなって

どうしようもなく大声が出したくなって

思いっきり叫んだ

「俺はここまで来たんだぞ」

そう、この地に刻み込むように叫んだ

そしたら今度は涙が止まらなくなった

この1年間、大学を休学し、お金を貯めて、旅に出て、毎日波照間を夢見て必死で歩いて、本当に全てをこの旅に捧げた。

一人寂しい暗い夜も足が動かなくなるほど疲れ果てた日も雨に打たれて泣きそうになった日も暑さに項垂れて日陰で立ち止まった日も、波照間に辿り着いた自分の姿を思い浮かべれば自然と前に進めた。それほどに想い続けたこの地にこの足でたどり着いたことは俺の誇りだ。

誰になんと言われようと、誇りだ

そして、そんな横石をいつも支えてくださったみなさん。本当にありがとうございました。ありがとうじゃ足りないほどだけど、それに代わる言葉がありません。この場で感謝を込めて言わせていただきます。

いつかまたこの道のどこかで…

この旅は世界から見たら小さな小さな出来事だけど、もしみなさんがふとこの横石の旅路を思い出して、元気が出たり笑えたりしていただけたらこんなに嬉しいことはありません。

横石の旅路はいつも皆さんと共にありました

それだけは本当に確かな、そして宝物です。
